STAINLESS STEEL / MATERIAL BASICS

Start with the environment.

Stainless steel relies on a chromium-rich passive film for corrosion resistance. Chlorides, deposits and tight crevices can challenge that film; “stainless” does not mean corrosion-proof.

304, 316 and 316L at a glance
GradeWhat distinguishes itWhat to consider
304General-purpose chromium-nickel stainless steel.A starting point for many mild environments; assess actual exposure.
316Molybdenum improves resistance to chloride-related localized corrosion.Consider for coastal exposure; seawater immersion and crevices need a separate assessment.
316LA lower-carbon variant of 316.Relevant where welding and sensitization matter; not an automatic strength upgrade.
Why can stainless steel show rust?

Salt deposits, unsuitable cleaners or iron contamination can cause staining. Identify the cause before treating the surface; recurring corrosion needs a material and exposure review.

What should I request with the material?

Request the specified grade, material test certificate, batch identification and the agreed inspection results. Grade identification and rope breaking-force verification are different checks.

Does stainless steel still need care?

Yes. Remove deposits using a compatible cleaning method, avoid cross-contamination from carbon-steel tools and follow the rope supplier’s lubrication and inspection instructions.
